[ SHOWGSD-L ] My take on Temp Test @ Futurities

I feel that in trying to continue to add rules on top of rules and verbiage
that could intimidate Futurity judges, a no win situation has been born. In
many cases we have AKC licensed judges who have been judging for 20 or 30 years
and yet they are being handed a contract with step by step instructions of
exactly how to do their temperment test in the Futurity. Then on top of that
they are told that "someone" will be watching them and writing up a report on
if they did it right or wrong?!?! So, what transpires is a complete
UNNATURAL temperment test because the judge is going through specific motions
and feels under a microscope. This is where I see a problem. Any temperment
test should be motions of normal natural everyday situations. The judge should
walk up to me naturally with no strange or awkward motions and casually say hi
to me and pet my dog on their head. That's it, end of story. Anything else
that contains awkwardness or nervousness and I would expect my dog to react
suspiciously.
In the case of this past weekend at the SE Futurity I do not blame the judge at
all. I showed under her just several weeks ago and her temperment test was
perfectly fine. I don't believe any dogs were excused. But then weeks later
at the Futurity, she is given a specific set of instructions and told there is
an "observer" and what happens? It doesn't take a genius to figure out where
the issue is.
I sympathize with everyone affected as 2 of my clients were as well. And both
of these animals I have shown many times without issue including the days
before the Futurity this weekend.
