In 1971 I went to work for General Motors as a traveling man - going to
troubled dealerships and finding solutions to their problems. Great job!
The per diem was $100.00 for personal food and expenses, but if you took a
dealer or any of his employees to lunch or dinner, you kept the receipt and
that was paid outside of the per diem, plus 15% for tip. You were expected
to have $200.00 in company cash in your pocket at all times, just in case...
You got a car, a credit card and the company was available 24/7 to book and
pay for any flight you needed - You decided. As I said, I could have lived
on the expense account in those days. But that was 40+ years ago.
Now that the President owns General Motors, the field staff probably have to
pay the government per diem, but that's another story.
Board members are not employees, they are volunteers and benefits are not
part of the package. BUT - possible we ought to take another look at this
and support those who work for the club so that they can come closer to even
for their efforts.
