Chuck, I don't believe I've ever owned a dog didn't come from linebreeding, and every dog I've owned has gone to Lance as much as anyone else's, yet I haven't generally had oversized dogs, pale pigment, soft pasterns, straight shoulders, temperament problems, or even soft ears. Why do you suppose that is? It's because I bred away from those problems, and any others I could identify. Just a note ... I personally didn't put much effort into breeding dark pigment so I'll give all of the credit for that to breeders who had their hands on the lines behind my dogs. If these problems exist, it is because we breeders allowed them to exist. Every possible fault that the breed can have has crossed through someone's control a multitude of times since the breed's beginnings, and even since Lance's day. It is a cop out to trace pedigrees in order to find a name to blame problems on. The point of breeding better dogs is to eliminate faults through intelligent selection. It is not to seek out a line of perfect animals with some false hope of maintaining that perfection. There is a reason for that. There are no perfect dogs. Even if that perfect dog did exist, exactly who do you plan to breed it to? I also submit that the warnings against linebreeding were in fact warnings against intense inbreeding. If someone is doing intense inbreeding in GSDs today, I've not met them ... Have you? You discredit Lance's producing ability by stating that he was bred to a thousand bitches ... then you seem to ignore the fact that those thousand bitches gave anywhere from 0 to 100% of their gene pool to each and every puppy produced with Lance. That is not very scientific in my opinion. I've seen the "breeding coefficient" formula used in debates many times, and I assume anyone concerned with Lance's name being behind most American lines is using that as a base for their opinion. Well ... That formula is mathematics, and far from scientific fact. It gives absolutely no consideration to the bitches used with the dog. It gives no consideration at all to the randomness in combining gene pools with breeding partners. And ... it give not even the hint of credence to the most important factor in breeding dogs .... SELECTION. I submit that it would be more productive to work from the assumption that breeders in general are at least attempting to do what breeders do ... breed for improvement. In order to do this well, one must weigh one problem against another while assessing the potential benefits of choosing a specific breeding pair. Faults like soft pasterns are not merely a cursed familial trait that will disappear by erasing names from a pedigree because the dog behind the name may have passed those faults on. The only way soft pasterns will disappear is through breeder education. Once everyone in the game realizes that soft pasterns are faulty, and the problem is treated as such by breeders, exhibitors, and judges ... only then will the fault be driven away. WELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What have we suffered thru??????? those problems exactly, and the pasterns have continued to go down further so we now have the sever problem front and rear!!! ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2005.
