I almost said that. When I was on the board, I was asked to be the
parliamentarian. I purchased a new copy of Roberts Rules of Order and read it
through, to refresh my understanding. I brought it with me to every meeting. I
had
no problem working with the board and keeping things in order.
I did attend a recent meeting where the club hired an independent
parliamentarian, and he gave the board some advice that made cringe, and often
was not
asked what to do, and things just went on as if no one cared. I didn't
think the club got their money's worth, but I have no idea what was paid, or
who
hired him.
I did note that Margy tried to get procedures followed as to motions, but it
worked for one discussion then was abandoned in order to speed things up.
It is up to our President to run the meeting, and I served under two, very
different people. But, both did a good job, as has Lew. But everyone has their
own style.
A problem has now come up as the board has asked Margy to resign, and she is
sending a letter out to the board responding to the charges. In that letter
she reveals a number of problems that this club has addressed and ignored in
the last few years, and it is very instructive. There is no parliamentary
procedure for this, nor is there anything in the by-laws or the Policy and
Procedure Manual. It is just being done.
I have asked Margy to make her charges and responses public, as it is
important as we consider who to elect to the new board. I have urged her to do
so,
but I will leave it up to her. if she does publish her letter it will help
everyone understand the problems this board has faced and why those problems
have come up. I sent my representation letter and her responses in the mail
today to all board members. If you call any of them after Thursday, I am sure
they can go over it with you.
