Okay - You are coming to be my Mother for a while and teach me all of that. Or
at least put it all in a book and send it to me. LOL
I grew up with Pizza night, Taco night, Hamburger Helper night, & dog club
meeting or training night when that meant Frisch's Big Boy with everyone
afterward. It's a wonder I am able to run (rather than roll) around a dog show
ring after 18 years of those meals! The only time I got a meal like you
describe is when we went to my Grandma's for a holiday. :(

You didn't learn to shop with my mother <VBG>.
We skipped the prepared food and frozen food sections. (I learned they were
more expensive!) A handful of roasted organic cherry tomatoes, (or roasted
asparagus, or grilled squash...pick your veggie), a handful of dried pasta, a
few shrimp (or scallops....huge diver scallops are $10 a lb., so figure 1/4 lb.
per serving, plenty! or chicken, pick your protein), some good olive oil a
little garlic and for the same $5 you have a feast!
Or with summer coming, you marinated a chicken breast, or a piece of salmon
throw it on the grill with a few potato wedges or carrots or whatever you have
handy, throw a peach (or a pineapple wedge) on the grill after you turned it
off while you eat the main course, served the grilled fruit with a little
frozen yogurt and for well under $5, you have an even better feast!
Or on a day like today you "build" a soup or stew serve with wonderful bread
and for under $2 a serving you eat like royalty, lol:) I can feed an army with
soup, lol. God bless Mom and her shopping....
