Corn, wheat etc. are not fillers when used in appropriate amounts. Corn is
an excellent protein source and believe it or not, when processed properly
is MORE digestible than rice, wheat etc. Wheat is also a good protein
source and wheat gluten is the product that binds the wet ingredients
together in canned/pouched foods. Companies could do away with it, but it
would take three other separate ingredients to do the job = more ingredients
for people to question/complain about and more cost.
It does cost more for certain dog food companies to source their super
premium quality ingredients, to purchase them, ship them, monitor all
systems as the ingredients are processed into a form that is nutritionally
balanced for everybody's dog.
We also use Proplan, and I know it's more expensive for us to buy in Canada
than in the US. Definitely the rebates come in handy, but we would be hard
pressed to find something that works as well for our dogs as it does. I am
confident that the over 100 years of research that goes into each bag means
that these people know what they are doing and have for a long time.

Sure the cost is more to make the specialty dog goods. Corn , wheat etc are
fillers- Those meals for $5 contain a lot of filler
Does it cost that much more I doubt it.-
I feed proplan - the dogs do well(as evidence by all the seniors I have) and
thank heavens for the rebate checks.
