[ SHOWGSD-L ] Dog People

While answering a private email I had a thought I'd like to share. I =
believe
that most of us long-time dog people were "dog people" from an early age. =
We
were just waiting to stumble on to the show world. I know dogs were =
important
to me before I could walk. My parents did not have show dogs and I =
discovered
this new arena at age 20. I was a dog person waiting for something to =
happen.
I mention this because it is possible that some of the new people who =
leave the
show world do so also because "dogs" are not their real thing, or as we =
put it
in the breed, " not in their blood." Couple that with being sold an =
"average"
dog that doesn't win that often and it's Bye Bye. Somehow I think there =
are
also some that will persevere no matter what, they can't help it...it
"happened" to them a long time ago.

I was born a dog person and pestered my parents for a dog from the time I =
could talk. I remember one Christmas when Santa brought a stuffed dog, =
hoping that would satisfy me, but all it did was make me more determined =
to have the real thing. Finally, in 5th grade, I succeeded in convincing =
my parents to get me a dog - an oversized shelte that I took all the way =
through utility in obedience competiton. An older couple who conducted =
the local dog obedience classes (Eleanor and Reynold Tinetti who had =
GSD's) took me under their wings, transporting me to dog shows and =
obedience trials. I'm been hooked ever since - went to college and got a =
degree in animal science and got my first GSD as my college graduation =
present from my parents. I agree - for some of us, it's in our blood...
