If y'all had followed all this "crap," which was started by a television program over there (and aired here, too, after a while) called Pedigree Dogs or something like it, you'd know that there have been a bunch of breeds that've been hit on for being unhealthy...and yes, Shepherds are one. Crazy people made the decisions, vets and so-called researchers did a VERY LITTLE research, and now, 3 years later, the instigators of the whole problem are coming forth and apologizing...and guess what? It's too late. This is what happens when the AR people stir up the pet owners and get them going...just because one dog has a problem (or even 100 dogs) doesn't mean the whole breed does........the Pekingese who's been prevented from showing in the group at Crufts is from the same breeder as the Peke who won the Garden here last month. Wait and see what kind of Shepherd goes thru. The UK dogs don't look much like ours...they don't have all the angulation...but last time I looked, a number of them WERE nearly crippled, with those damn banana backs and rears tucked so far underneath themselves that they could barely go forward, never mind have any follow thru...and forget reach.........it was non-existent. Pekes and Bulldogs are just the tip of the iceberg. So what happens? Nothing...we sit on our butts and let the AR groups stir the pot until nobody can breed anything? Looks like it......... As for the vet understanding the breed, that isn't required. It just has to be a vet. Makes me think of the little exchange in the movie "The King's Speech,"when the prince is told not to smoke. He says his doctor advised him to do it...and the speech guy says "he's a fool." The prince comes back with "he's been knighted." the response then is "Makes it official then." Same with most vets.............
