Yes, your regular vet can OFA cardiac check your dog. However, the OFA
Certificate states whether a cardiologist or a practioner performed the exam.
Also, if you have an ECHO or EKG done, it states that, too.
Personally, I will ONLY have my cardiac evaluations done by a cardiologist. If
a problem is found, I move onto an ECHO.
BTW - I have a bitch who has a Grade 2 heart murmur on auscultation but is
clear through an ECHO, and she has an OFA Cardiac Certification. She has an
innocent murmur.

hen I read what is required; basically ANY vet can listen to a dog's
eart and say it doesn't have a murmur. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm....how many times have
e known vets to miss a murmur. Sort of like having a vet read hip/elbow
-rays and not send them in....no further screening tools? That doesn't
ake sense to me. If they required an EKG I'd be all over it. (This emphasis
s mine lol.)
o....I don't bother. In all honesty,as it stands now and unless/until
he requirements are changed, the OFA data base doesn't mean a lot to me.
uppies are vet checked here before they leave, if/when they ever need
nesthesia, (x-rays etc.) we do EKGs prior to anesthesia. I've never bothered
o send the results in. I wouldn't keep much let alone breed a dog w/ any
ype of heart issue.
or what it's worth, I feel the same way about the DM test recognized by
he OFA. Too many questions for me as to the differences in the DNA marker
or GSDs compared to other breeds. So if a GSD doesn't have the marker
here a corgi, ridgeback, dobie has one....is the GSD really clear????? Or is
hat a false sense of security???? Ginny can speak to this far more
loquently than I, but I have some reservations unless/until more research is
ompleted. For now, I'll continue to pour over pedigrees.

Why is it that we don't see more GSD's with their OFA for cardiac? Since
ost heart defects are thought to be genetically transmitted wouldn't it
eem to be a good tool to use? It seems almost shameful there are only 702
SD's in the OFA database. Esp when there are low cost clinics available.
