While this may be true, there seems to be a change afoot. It seems that more
lines who only showed in the specialty rings are now showing in the AB's and
doing well. And, more and more conformation line dogs seem to be getting
herding and Rally titles the last couple years. And, there are more
German/American crosses out there with progeny who are excelling in both
venues. These are
all good things, right? It seems that the trend is leaning toward the pretty
dog who can work. For the die hard working dog folks, only the German lines
will do. But, the pet buyer who wants to compete in performance events, now
has a plethera of lines and options from which to choose.
I am fortunate that my show line dogs have an awesome herding instinct. And
I start the pups, I want to keep for awhile, in agility to build confidence
and learn how to use their bodies. The people who have pups from me may not be
competing as yet, but they are training in conformation, herding, obedience,
Rally and therapy dog. (I have German and American lines) Breeding for both is
the best of all worlds. Afterall, we have a Breed that CAN do it all :-)

But, your observation is correct. So, the question is; for those of you with
show lines, how do you handle inquiries from potential puppy buyers who want
a performance dog when you have show lines? Do you refer them to someone
else? Do you bother to put performance titles on your dogs? Or, do you just
let
them see the pups who won't make it in the conformation ring?

Interesting topic.

When people look for a performance GSD they tend to look at German lines
which have less angulation, as it is more conducive to jumping and running.
Very
few performance people (as in, like, none) will go to a GSD specialty line as
they feel there is too much angulation and it's no good for things like
agility and obedience (once they get to open work).
