HI Deb and Stormy, I do agree with you on the invasion of privacy. I wouldn't like that either, although here in Pa. we have kennel licensing laws and we are inspected twice yearly. This really isn't a problem at all. It takes about 10 minutes and he's gone. I guess what scares me, and I realize few people get to see what I see, is how big these puppy mills are getting. I live in Lancaster County where the Amish and Mennonite farmers have taken to dog breeding with a vengeance. You can't tell anymore what is going in...if its a big chicken house or a dog breeding operation. These buildings are easily $100,000 buildings with state of the art lighting and ventilation systems. Where does an Amishman get that kind of money? Not from himself or the Amish Church, but from bigger corporations such as the Hunte company. They hold hundreds of dogs! The dealers come in with air-conditioned tractor trailers and pick up puppys. When things are slow, the Amish try and sell locally because the dealers won't pick up what they don't need. I don't know what happens to the pups that are no longer cute and unsaleable, but as a groomer I see the ones they do sell. Want a 35 lb Bichon? Howabout a Shih Tzu who's lower jaw is a half inch longer than her top jaw and she can't close her mouth. A poodle who has such a poor hair coat it hangs down like a Maltese ( who knows, maybe it is half maltese), a cocker who has one ear attached higher to its head than the other one ( actually, I see quite a few like this) and the list goes on... meanwhile the amount of dogs living in a 2' x 2' cage grows, and while we sit back and don't address the situation the animal rights groups do. They are the ones reaching the public's ear. They aren't telling people to go to a reputable breeder. I think we better wake up and look why the AKC is contracting to petstores. Maybe they feel its already to late for us. I'ld like to point out that no where have I read that LA is "judging whether you can breed or not". They have stated they are not after the purebred fanciers. IF you have shown your dog in the last year, if its titled, or if its a police service dog, or assistance dog it does not need to be neutered. Does that mean you can't breed Labradoodles or multi-poos ? Probably. If you want to develop a new breed than I would guess you have to move, because they don't want you dumping your experiments in the local pound. On the other hand, if you belong to a rare breed group and own purebred rare breed(s) and can show them you are active in the club and show your dogs in some sort of venue then you are okay. What is wrong with communicating and education about what you are doing? What is the problem with that? Wouldn't that eliminate the pet store puppies? Where are they going to get them if not from the puppy mills? Won't that put the dog breeding business back in the hands of the true fanciers? Either that or its going to fill up our classes and give handlers a boom like they've never seen <G>!! Seriously, the LA commissioners were quoted as saying they are not trying to hurt the purebred dog people, they just want to eliminate the casually bred dogs that fill up the pound. JMO Sue, to a point I do agree with you. This is why my pet puppies are sold on a spay and neuter contract. I have lost some sales over that but I don't care, I don't want my babies out there getting bred to death by people who haven't a clue. The concern is, there are way to many ways around the law and all it does is invade everyone privacy. Please read everything there is a lot more to the Law, that truly is not good. I have already had many inquiries about joining our Club in California. People entering dogs at shows so they don't have to neuter them... Yes, good for handlers, club memberships maybe but still "invasion of privacy". That part is absolutely no good.
