Must say that's what I do for fill. The varipower module I use mostly for when 
I've got the flash some way off camera to control the output.

Peter's advise is squarely on the mark;  neat, sweet and the reason I  
almost never bother with other than auto flash for fill light.  If your  
interest in the VariPower is for that purpose, I urge you to try  
Peter's technique with the 283, as is.  Happiness will ensue.
