Peter's advise is squarely on the mark; neat, sweet and the reason I almost never bother with other than auto flash for fill light. If your interest in the VariPower is for that purpose, I urge you to try Peter's technique with the 283, as is. Happiness will ensue.

For fill, just set the exposure on the flash to be 2 stops under your ambient. You can do this with the dial on the front. Blue is F8 so if Ambient is F8, then set dial to red F4. (This would be for ISO100).
