Bob, I think the difference between your drum scanners and the Epson might be 
that you were probably using a mounting fluid with the drums.  You can avoid 
Newton rings with the Epson flatbeds by using a mounting fluid -- messier but 
effective.

With Tri-X, I rarely have a problem with Newton rings unless the negative has 
large areas of clear film.  With some other films with thinner emulsions, like 
Tech Pan, Newton rings are a constant struggle for me if scanning them directly 
on the glass without mounting fluid.
