Interesting. I always thought WC was the initials for Weston Crapper. The crapper being the flushing toilet invented by Weston. In America there is nearly always a bath tub and a toilet in the same room. So I am not sure how euphemistic it is. Of course on your side of the pond don't they still dump the bed pan out the window in the morning?

I just spent some time in Mexico and there is quite an industry of public toilets which are always marked by a sign with WC and an arrow. It costs usually 3 pesos and they have an attendant that sits there all day collecting the pesos and offering a small bit of toilet paper.
