Link did in fact use flash bulbs. I have the book on Link and will look =
that up this evening. Link designed his own huge flash units by =
installing 14 bulbs into one large reflector. There's a well known =
picture of Link with one of these units.

  I think so too. He may also have used flash powder. Flash=20
powder produces an astonishing amount of light and requires=20
rather simple apparatus to use. Victor flash powder was=20
advertised at least through the 1950's.
