To translate this for our non-USian members, Slobodan is saying that he voluntarily enlisted rather than being conscripted, a choice back in the Viet-Nam and Korean War eras. In the two World Wars, you were not permitted to voluntarily enlist though you could "volunteer" for the Draft.

Again, none of my ancestors were ever drafted so the system is a bit alien to me. I did have two fourth-great-uncles killed at the Battle of Culloden but they showed up on their own in the service of the "King over the water" and had to send their kid brother home and glad I am that they did so, as he was my fourth-great-grandfather. Of course, they served in the Perthshire Regiment and died wearing their kilts.
