A capable driver with a straight drive will still work the stinks on an
idiot driving an automatic. Part of the problem is that only an idiot
would chose to surrender control, and those only an idiot would drive an
automatic transmission vehicle. Learn to drive, learn to drive well, and
do so.

EPA figures are as bogus as are most government figurses. Find out for
yourself: drive a manual and learn how to drive a manual, and enjoy paying
less for a system which provides:

a) greater physical health (look at the benefit from clutching your way
through a mile of urban traffic -- your heart will THANK you, and this is
the case)

b) greater gas mileage, most notably on highway trips on cruise control --
the automatic shifts all the time into lower gears with higher mileage
sacrifices, while the manual simply purrs along.

c) greater control. Those who drive in real parts of the country, such as
the hill around here or the mountains in the Rockies and do so regularly
will never be happy with an automtic. You NEED a manual to be able to
ensure your control over your vehicle.
You need to avoid that damned liguid clutch crap.
