This dye is available from B&H Photovideo. This is a red powder which is dissolved in water to make a stock solution. It is currently marked as Out-of-Stock on their website. Check with older photo stores which may have it. Kodak Crocein Scarlet is for use on negatives as a retouching or dodging dye for masking pinholes and scratches, opaquing large areas, lightning shadows, intensifying highlights, etc.. -----Original Message----- From: pure-silver-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:pure-silver-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of janet ness Sent: Wednesday, May 11, 2005 8:49 AM To: pure-silver@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [pure-silver] Re: negative scratches/Edwal No-Scratch I have been having a lot of pinholes in my large format negatives. Where can I find Kodak Croceine Scarlet? I've never seen it. I've never had much luck with Edwal No-Scratch. The idea behind No-Scratch is to fill the scratch and only the scratch with a liquid that has a similar optical density to the film support. Try applying a small amount of the liquid with a brush "in the direction of the scratch". A retouching #000 brush is really more convenient than the one supplied. Think of what you are doing as a kind of retouching. If the scratch is on the emulsion side of the negative then some of the image has probably been removed resulting in a more complicated problem. The negative be retouched with Kodak Croceine Scarlet (Neo-coccine). The Edwal product comes in a small bottle w/ an applicator brush attached to the screw-on top. It would take the contents of the entire bottle to use it in the way the you describe using the Tetenal product. But next time, I will brush on the Edwal No-Scratch and then try hanging the negative strip as you describe. Perhaps it will spread evenly over the negatives that way.=3D20 I went to the Tetenal website, and could not find this item. What is the name of it. B&H did not have any Tetenal scratch removers either. >=3D20 > BTW I always thought the nose grease resp Vaseline > trick was for the=3D3D20 > emulsion side only if that side is scratsched You may be right, I hadn't heard that before. But I am extremely reluctant to touch the emulsion side of a negative. I scratched the emulsion of a negative when cleaning it w/ a cloth once, so I won't touch the emulsion w/ anything except air from a blower or canned air unless absolutely necessary.
