I definitely noticed a difference, but not so much between brands as between
specimens. Lenses are available so inexpensively that I acquired several copies
each of an array of lenses in various brands and focal lengths and put them
through Ctein’s test at a size between 11x14 and 16x20. The best ones by focal
length I kept and put the others back on the market. So I have EL-Nikons in 50,
105, and 150, Componon-Ss in 80, 135, and 210, an APO-Rodagon in 180, and a
Computar (90/100?) that was so outstanding in the center that I kept it for
possible macro work. There may be a 40 and another 150 kicking around in the
cabinet also. The only way I would have known is to have done the controlled
comparison test.

read it again, I'm amazed that some extremely common (and in my
experience very good) enlarging lenses didn't even appear in his
famous tests. To me, his criteria seem too strict for real-world use.

practical use? And most important of all : WHY ?
