The oxidation reaction of sulfite is a lot more complicated. Sulfite
may be oxidized to sulfate if a very strong oxidizing agent is in
contact with sulfite, but usual oxidizing agents in solutions are like
molecular oxygen, peroxide, hydroxyl radical, etc. The problem is that
sulfite itself is involved in its own sulfite radical pathway.

Shelf life of plain sulfite/bisulfite solution is actually much
shorter and unpredictable than typical MQ or PQ developer
concentrate/stock solutions containing same amount of sulfite.
