Oh, I hope you will join us. This is exactly why I thought a postcard exchange
would be a good thing. It's simpler for sending, and obviously less expensive,
but what I am hearing is that some people like to print large and wouldn't mind
receiving a small print in exchange. If that's not the case we could have one
group for postcards and another for larger prints. In any case, I would be
happy to exchange postcards with you but I suspect the others would like to
receive a print from you, too, even if a postcard! Don't let that keep you from
participating please.

Hi Janet,
I would be interested, but since I live in The Netherlands, and most
reactions thus far seems USA based, I would prefer sending post card size
across the ocean.
Perhaps compile a list of participants, your location and intended size of
the print your willing to send ?
Than participants can choose to continue or withdraw, since than one can
estimate the time and money needed for the exchange ?
Best,

What if we set the date sometime in the end of April? Do you think that's too
far out? It's not for me but I'd like input.
We can leave it open, concerning print size, if everyone agrees. I just don't
want the cost to be a burden to anyone. I'll leave that up to you guys. Seems
the consensus is for larger rather than postcards. I'll go with that and
maybe another time we can do postcards.
Let's put a limit on the number in the exchange (which may not be an issue
anymore.) 10 or 12 tops?

Depending on when you do it, Id be interested. It will be several weeks
though before I can. As far as print sizes, for something like this an 8x10
would be a good compromise. There is also one other option. Instead of a
specific size, why not have either a range of sizes or leave the size up to
the person creating the photo. If they decide to make it big and want to pay
the postage, fine. International postage adds up quickly, but if they are
willing to pay it knowing what they get back may not be as big as they sent,
Id be ok with that. I would be disappointed if I was expecting something
16x20, and got something 3x5. IF everyone was fine with being surprised at
what they got, why restrict? I can also see where some upper and lower
limits might be beneficial.
The bigger the group the more benefit the range might be. It is one thing to
get in the darkroom for a half dozen prints. It is another to have to get 20
done.
Brooks Jensen from the Lenswork podcast, and magazine, is a big fan of
printing small and small projects or portfolios. Though I agree, some things
and some prints need to be big to make the desired impact, I am also
beginning to believe that bigger is not always better. That is tough for
anyone that lives in Texas. Yet there is something different about
interacting with a small print that creates for me a different reaction. Not
necessarily better or worse, just different.

The reason I suggested postcards is because there's no need for a large
envelope, gathering cardboard or whatever to protect the print, and the
greater postage. AND I sort of enjoy printing small, but that's just me. And
like has been stated, for people outside the US it can get pretty pricey
mailing large, so how about on this go if we do postcards… Unless that means
you have to go out and buy for the cards.
So I guess the question is really, do you guys have postcard paper for the
darkroom? If you don't, and if you don't want to buy it (because we know that
no darkroom paper is cheap!) Then we can just say print whatever size you
want. You guys who like to print large, are you going to feel slighted if you
receive a small print?
Any ideas for time allowed for a "mail it out by..." date? Let's see if we
can gather some more people to participate. I've never organized one of these
exchanges here so have mercy if I'm awkward, and if you've done it before
feel free to tell me a better way. If you email me your mailing address I
will compile a list to send back to each contributor. And what else am I not
thinking of?

I’d like to participate, but with smaller prints. Mailing out of Ireland can
be expensive.

I think that is individual judgement. I also like large prints but have

I'd prefer larger prints, because i've always thought that anything
smaller than 11 X 14 just isn't worth the trouble of going into the

would simplify it, certainly would be easier to mail out. I'm
willing to do a larger print if that's what you all prefer.
Thoughts?
