Mixing your own is not at all difficult. You need a suitable scale but a
postage scale will do for most of the formulas. Graduated containers are not
hard to find although you want something with finer graduations that most
kitchen measuring cups. Its mostly a matter of being systematic. The
chemicals are not too difficult to obtain and for the most part are not too
expensive. Some keep better than others, you can keep a fairly large amount
of them while other, mostly developing agents, are attacked by the oxygen in
the air and don't have a long shelf life.
Kodak formulas have more complete instructions than most others but
generally the ingredients are to be mixed in the order given in the formula.
A few solutions have a short life after mixing but most will last for
weeks or months if properly bottled. While its convenient to be able to mix
up what you need from packages or bottles mixing your own gives you some
freedom and control over the quality of the ingredients.
Even if you decide to stick with prepared chemicals you will learn a lot
from mixing your own.
I concur with Richard. The only things you need are:
- Good ventilation
- A high quality breathing mask (you do not want to inhale chem powder)
- Eye and hand protection
- A lab coat to protect your clothes.
I also find one of these vvvvvveeeeery handy because chemistry often need to be
mixed at around 120F. This heats- and then later mixes chemistry very nicely:

I also use a cheap digital kitchen thermometer to check to see when my
distilled water
is hot enough to start mixing chems.
