I wonder if you have tried Dektol or D-72 diluted 1:1. Note
that 130 specifies this as the standard dilution while Kodak
specifies 1:2. It does make a difference. Dr. Richard Henry, in
his book, states that he began to use Dektol at 1:1 by accident
but decided to stick with it as his standard dilution. I've tried
both and also prefer 1:1. This is not to say Dektol and 130 will
be the same at the lower dilution but its worth exploring.

I have mixed my own 130 and used the Formulary product – both good with no measurable differences. Agree with Bob on capacity and blacks. I used Amidol for years (with Azo) but it became increasingly difficult to get good, reproducible Amidol. At 1:1 using test wedges or visual – as good as Amidol without the issues.
Using old Azo or “newer” – all good.

DEAR ERIC ET AL.,
I have used the Formulary version of Ansco 130, fiendishly deceptively called Formulary 130, for about 20 years! I got tired of mixing fresh Amidol devs for every printing session. It is a metol/hydroquinone/glycin dev and has an amazingly large print capacity! It also gives very black blacks, nearly as good as Amidol.
****Now, HERE is something interesting: My experience has been that I see less fog on old papers using F-130 than Dektol! This has proven true for some very old printing paper from some Azo contact printing paper I bought around 1988 to some old Oriental Seagull fiber base graded and VC I bought more recently. I know this is anecdotal and not the result of proper testing but it is interesting!
CHEERS!

You might try the formula for Ansco 130. It was my standard developer for my production from early 90s until the end of commercial printing in around 2014.
Similar to dektol.

I bought it from Unique Photo, and called them this morning. Got a call back this afternoon and was told it's perfectly fine (though not with me). He said it performs normally but honestly, it's thick and very dark chocolatey. Seems I saw here recently that Ilford has a developer that's like Dektol. I think I'll search that.
They may say it's the dark Dektol is just the same but I like to be able to see what's coming up on the print. I'm sending back the rest of the order.

Richard. This brown Dektol was first mentioned over a year
ago. Nation wide printers saw it. It’s not a local
phenomena. I switched to LPD long ago but needed some paper
developer this fall. I got new dektol. Brown. Not smelly.
I’ve been doing this long enough to know (50 years) and it
didn’t seem to have that odor

Dektol should be white. The brown is from oxididation
due to a leak in the container. It may also have a
fishy odor. I have encountered bad Dektol in very old
bag containers. Have it replaced. Developers should
never be more than very slight tan in color.

of you found it bad right out of the package?
Packaging says expiration date is 2023.
