I never saw D-76 done that way, but DK-50 definitely was packaged
exactly as you describe. I still have DK-50 cans stashed
here that are of that configuration.
Interestingly, the soft-packaged DK-50 has not survived the test
of time, but these old cans with the chemistry separated are just
fine after decades on the shelf.
These days I almost never use DK-50. In fact, if people want to
try some, I'm happy to give some of my stash away. I am pretty
much only doing Pyrocat-HD and the occasional D-23 batch. That is
to say, I am rolling my own ...
