Well I have the DVD from the publisher (although I haven’t looked at it). It was done by the designer in Quark express, which I don’t have and don’t know enough about to use but I understood that blurb et al have their own layout software and I assumed that there would be compatibility problems.
Mark, I have only had the rights returned quite recently after the last US book sold (the UK ones sold out very fast) and have been really busy since then.
You are right, I did enjoy writing the book very much, but it was a lot of work and took a lot of time. Not sure I have that time to allocate right now for maybe only a handful of books. I would love to bring it back to market but it seems daunting unless I find a publisher

If you have the layout in electronic format, blurb, lulu or maybe any of a host of publishing outlets would be able to reproduce it from the format in which it currently exists. You already have the editing done. There should be no need to re edit. Layout already exists. Unless you are going to change it, you shouldn't need to redo anything. Some have software to make it easier. I still think there is likely a place where it can be done with the same material that printed the original book.
Lulu and Blur sell directly to the customer, they collect the cash and send you a check. You as the author are not involved in the sales transaction to the buyer. The beauty of it is that there is no need to produce anything till its sold. You or a customer can buy just one book at a time if that's what they want. Unlike in years past where an author would have to buy say 200 copies to sell themselves, that is not necessary anymore.
Most sites let you set your own price, the site charges for printing the book and usually a transaction fee. If you do any extra marketing its all to the good, and everyone wins. Once the word gets out that your books are at X site, I am sure the customers will find you.
You had to have spent a great deal of time in the darkroom to have the knowledge to write that book. You had to have enjoyed writing enough to share that knowledge, so it would be a real shame to see it limited because of the needs of a large publishing house.

I hear about online publishing but have no experience of it (preferring the darkroom of course).
Recalling the many long weeks of layout, design and re-editing that preceded the book I’m not sure it is so simple to reproduce via blurb or whatever.

Subject: [pure-silver] Re: High contrast printing? Well Tim One thing I do hope you consider with your "out of print" books is to not let them STAY out of print. Way too much valuable information there to keep them unavailable. Though the niche may be too small for the big publishing houses to make enough of a profit to keep them in print, this to me seem to be the perfect situation for self publishing them. A place like Lulu or Blurb or maybe any of a host of possible outlets are available with minimal effort there to keep them available and profitable for you. The hard work is already done.
I made a phone call to KEH the other day about trying to find some used Paul Buff lights. The response was, "We almost never get any because anyone that buys them keeps them." I suspect your books would fall into the same category. Yet with self publishing, even if its just a few a month with no up front investment its cash that wouldn't have been there otherwise and the knowledge is still readily available.
Just my 2 cents worth or with inflation I better toss in a nickel.

Yes the 1st LITH book (was actually my 2nd book) is the MPLPC and the 2nd
LITH book (actually my 4th book) is the WOLP.
The materials list you downloaded from my site is more up dated than WOLP
now and I will have to update it again this fall I expect, meanwhile the
newletters have been updating it. I can send you those if you want then,
together with the one about to go out, you'll be bang up to date and
somewhat ahead in fact as the latest news in it hasn't been released yet.
The WOLP is more than an update on materials though. It is the only
international collection of lith printers' work. As it is such a flexible
process it can be pushed into many different 'looks' and I felt that could
be inspirational. It also contains some newer techniques BTW.
