Its from stress on the emulsion, pressure will also
result in marks. I don't remember if I ever read an
explanation of the effect, perhaps Ryuji will know, but it
may have to do with the distortion of the crystals by
mechanical forces causing the movement of electons to a
position where they mimic exposure to light.
