Stane, I am afraid that your friend may have to send it to Sigma or one of
their authorized repair stations.  Under NO circumstances should a modern
zoom lens be disassembled by the owner.  It is correct to assume that
anything made by man can be repaired by man, but zoom lenses and mechanical
sewing machines were made by the devil and must be sent back to hell for
repair ;-)

I am afraid the lens would never be right unless aligned by a trained
mechanic.
