What does that mean?

A Beseler 45 series enlarger has one giant rack, attached
to the lamp housing/condenser, on which the negative and lens
stage ride.

A knob on the lens stage 'locks' the lensboard in position
on the rack. Like most things Beseler the operation of this
locking knob is a charitable "A" for effort and a far more
charitable "C" for implementation. The action of the knob
is reminiscent of overheated drum brakes, it feels that the more I tighten the knob the more the lens stage is liable to slip.

The problem of the lens moving whenever a negative carrier is
inserted is, TTBOMK, confined to late-model 45MX enlargers
with untapered bellows between the negative and lens stages,
and only with 50mm lenses and large print sizes - which covers
about 80% of my prints.
