Not a chemist - for fiber prints, I fix for 5 min in standard fixer then place
in holding bath of slow running water- at end of session I fix in fresh pure
hypo for 5 min then tone in selenium toner mixed with PermaWash or similar with
gentle agitation throughout. I never get staining or uneven toning. I have
done variations of this with rapid fix no problem. I think the print has to
be thoroughly fixed or thoroughly washed (no fixer left) to get even toning and
often the problem lies in tired fixer or lack of agitation somewhere in the
process.. I usually follow with 6 min in pure perma wash but understand this
step to be redundant if you are mixing permawash with selenium. Wash for 60
min after. I have tested for residual fixer, residual silver and residual
PermaWash, the prints pass readily.

My normal archival fixing disciplines is:
1. One minute fix in Ilford rapid fixer
2. Five minute running water wash
3. Five minute PermaWash treatment
4. 3-7 min in Kodak Rapid Selenium Toner 1:40
5. 60min running water wash in an Eco Washer
Years ago, I tried combining the PermaWash and Toner
steps by diluting the KRST further to get a minimum
of 5 minutes time. This cause intermittent staining.
But as I read the ingredients for these concoctions,
I realized that KRST has Sodium Thiosulphate in it.
So ... should I really be toning first then hypo
clearning?
