A few months ago this was posted on FB and I wrote an extensive reply which I
will summarize here. During the 80s I shot (IIRC) 7 covers for Essence
Magazine and many pages inside. I was compulsive about testing and calibrating
my emulsions (Kodachrome, Ektachrome) for color balance and exposure and
calibrating them with Polaroid (to give the client an indication of what they
would get). I also would perform pre-shoot tests for whatever my subjects
were. The reason Essence hired me repeatedly was that I shot 2 1/4 Ektachrome
slides (with my 'Blads) that reproduced African Americans' skin well on the
printed page! THAT was my final goal...the magazine page or cover, NOT my
transparency. I simply factored and calibrated out anything odd that might
have been built into the films and "shot for the printer". I have always
believed, if we spent less time assessing credit or blame for things and more
time fixing them or using them well, we would be one helluva lot better off!

A very interesting piece in the New York Times. I am not sure
