From my European viewpoint the reaction of the author to the technician
is completely ludicrous.
The article is very interesting when the author talks about racial bias
in his grandfather's times or in film manufacture not paying attention
to detailing dark skin etc. But unless the technician used a racist
tone, interpreting a perfectly valid technical remark about lighting as
racism is ludicrous.
I guess that the American context makes people overly sensitive.
