And thanks for straightening this out! It is that old! I didn't have the
manual,
and it was just a wrong hunch on my part. The small battery that failed
was not the mercury 1.3 volt but an A640 one. Since the purchase
was made years ago on eBay and the battery had not failed until
recently, I was unaware of the situation. I don't think the A540
is the right voltage, as I've noticed the readings off the low
and high scales did not match. I think the replacement
circuitry I'm using in the Sinarsix might be the same.
But since the Minolta spotmeter suits my needs better,
the Pentax will likely just retire to the unused shelf.

From the Pentax manual for the old analog (not the oldest L shaped one - I
have one of those also):
The 1/21 meter is powered by two batteries - one 1,3 volt mercury battery
and one 9 volt dry cell. The mercury battery operates the high range, "H,"
and the dry cell operates the low range, "L."
Guess yours isn't that old?
