The first film I developed was Verichrome (not pan), in a
tray under a ruby lamp. I was probably about eight. I can still
see it in my mind. I think 127 film. I have no memory of the
images, probably shot in front of the house. My dad had taken a
course in photography and came home with a Kodak Darkroom in a
Box. So guess who used it? I got bitten very hard. I had some
exposure (no pun intended) to photography before this but it was
my first practical experience.

Plus, I got a Graflex 5x7 plate holder

fun to see the image come up under
the bright red safelight, a new experience
for me.

You mean Graflex holders. They are hard to find in any size.
Fortunately, my Super-D has a Graflok back so takes standard
Graphic holders. The Graflex back had a removable ground glass
panel and took various accessories but needed the different
holders. Actually either back could be gotten on either
camera.
Speed Graphics with Graflex backs were used for some
scientific
purposes because of the accessories that could be fitted on
them.
The Graflok back provided a standard spring back for
Graphic
holders but also had a removable panel to take accessories
held
by sliding lock strips similar to the Graflex back but did not
take Graflex accessories. The Graflok back could be
refitted onto
nearly any Graphic or Graflex camera.
