The thing about the tinderbox is that it was always paired with the
torch, and not the lantern.  The thing about the lantern, I felt, was
that it used less space in your backpack by virtue of the fact that
you didn't need the tinderbox, so, by being somewhat more "advanced"
than the torch, I thought Dever gave it the benefit of only needing
one backpack space.

It seems clear to me that Dever only wanted the tinderbox to be for
the torch, and thus phased them both out at the same time.  So the
question is, how advanced is the lantern?  Being a robust structure,
perhaps it has room in its frame for a couple of flints, or even has a
mechanism where if you turn a flint wheel it strikes the steel or
something like that.
