Hmm. Well, after talking to someone with more experience of oil lamps and other privations (hi, dad!), it seems that oil-burning Lanterns would still need some kind of flame to light the wick. Are there any instances in Books 7-12 where you are given the opportunity to use a Lantern? Should we add that you will need a Tinderbox to light the Lantern?
