Hmm, yes, one could model naughts and crosses with a game tree (and a big one at that) or a game in strategic form, however, I would maintain that at its most general, the game could be adequately defined and reasoned in something like Z which is a combination of 1st order logic and z-f set theory.

actually, I would also throw into it a study of combinatorics, which studies counting the number of alternatives in order to establish probability. Of course, this isn't the only area as it does not involve AI, but I remember some very interesting problems in that course when I was a student.

You know, AI uses a lot of areas of math and computer science to form strategies. I don't know if "game theory" is the proper name, but it comes to mind from somewhere deep in my memory.
Have fun.

I would use a combo of first order logic, set theory and a pinch of automata theory. You may find the following of some interest:

Hi,
I'm not sure how to ask this question since I don't have the background yet. When you have a program that is playing a game, let's say a simple game, like TicTacToe, and it tries to figure out what the best move is, what is that whole subject called? Or when you have a game where you are moving two people around and you don't want them to run into one-another, is that the same subject?

Thanks.
