This all sounds pretty complicated to somebody who has never seen version control in action before, but it's pretty basic. As an earlier post suggested on this thread, several developers can be editing the same sourcefile and version control is a means to selecting only those modifications (or additions) that have been planned/accepted/scheduled/etc.


Some of what I've seen written on this thread would more closely be classified as project management although the two (project management and version control) do go hand in hand in that version control (here referred to as revision control) is most effective when driven by solid project management.

By the way, nothing is completely fool-proof, but PM and VC harnessed together surely diminish the likelihood of unforeseen problems and disorganization. Bottom line is though, the developers/testers must buy in.
