I am sorry that I hit you as harshly as I did Alex, although my "threat" will remain undefined, I can be a real nasty "son of a she sleen" when provoked and don't give my tricks out, that way they can't be watched for and backups provided against, *evil grin* I reacted immediately after the event, I read at a rate of "98" on my comp since I get over 140 posts a day and wish to "hurry" through them which didn't give me time to react, at that rate I barely perceived what was going to come as it arrived. and due to some drug related issues (yes, legal drugs and my getting off them) I was not in, we will say, the best temperament the last week or more, so blew a fuse and typed my reply before I had had a chance to calm down.
looking things over s!l!o!w!!l!y! and with other folks comments, I can understand that you meant no ill by your use of "that which will not be spoken" as someone else put it.
I appreciate your apology, and hope that you can accept mine take it easy, elf Moderator, Blind Access Help Owner: Alacorn Computer Enterprises Specialists in customized computers and peripherals - own the might and majesty of a Alacorn! www.alacorncomputer.com proprietor, The Grab Bag, for blind computer users and programmers http://grabbag.alacorncomputer.com----- Original Message ----- From: "Alex Midence" <alex.midence@xxxxxxxxx>
To: <programmingblind@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, October 15, 2010 2:16 AM Subject: Re: Fw: youtube video, jaws versus NVDA That's an amazing message there. I don't know quite how to respond to you on that one. All I will say is that I did everything I could to ensure that someone would get some warning that they needed to hit the control key to stop speech and skip over the rest of the message. Sina had asked if I'd spelled the word correctly and whether or not I was sure the effect was as I described. I reproduced the word thinking to assist anyone who was interested in exploring this bug for themself in the limited way we can given the fact that we don't have the source code for eloquence. I warned people and followed my warning up by a blank line which usually makes a synth pause. I then typed in a string of equal signs which should be enough to make someone quiet their synth and do some skipping tilll they find a comprehensible bit of text to read. I thought this would give everyone plenty of time to avoid any unwanted crashes while still letting those who wanted to experience the bug for themselves the opportunity to do so. All you would have to do if you didn't want to hear it was jump to the bottom of my message and read it from there stopping at the beginning of the last paragraph. Or, someone might have switched from Jaws to NVDA since a large number of people have both on their machines. It was not intended as some sort of sick joke or an irresponsible bit of neglect that I put out knowing it would crash a screen reader for someone who didn't want it crashed. Several messages leading up to it talked about the fact that we were discussing a bug that crashed Jaws. Indeed, my first message was a caviat to unsuspecting readers who might have clicked on the link that they should watch out for this word in a comment placed by someone who I believe does have a rather odd sense of humor since there is nothing to warn somebody that he or she was about to type a word that might potentially crash someone else's Jaws. If my precautions were not enough, I do appologize for any inconvenience I may have caused any members of this list. It was truly unintentional. I figured that since we all either wrote software or aspired to some day, a discussion of a bug in a program we all use complete with a demonstration of said bug would be interesting. Having said all that, I don't know what you mean by claiming that I will not like what will happen to me if I "do it again" but, honestly, if you would rather that I unsubscribed, please tell me and I will do so. I am a grown man fully capable of unsubscribing myself from a list at the behest of the moderator. I don't need threats and I don't require the hand holding approach of being blocked/kicked off a list. So, if you need me to unsubscribe, please let me know. If I have violated some policy of the list, and I am on a probationary period of some kind, I'd also like to be told and made to understand precisely what constituted the infraction. Again, it was not my intention to inconvenience anyone here and if my precautions to avoid this were insufficient, I do appologize. In my defense, I figured that if someone on a programmers' list had read all the messages leading up to when I actually wrote the word out, they would be a bit cautious and slow down their speech or something since someone else might have actually deleted the dashes spelling out the word and posted it in a reply without warning. I know I sure was when I noticed someone had replied to my message. Regards, Alex M On 10/14/10, The Elf <inthaneelf@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote:

Can't test it right now again though. I'm in the middle of some homework for geology. It crashed me just fine earlier this afternoon. WArning: word follows all the equal signs: ===================== webhesday If yours doesn't crash, wonder what's different about your machine. I'm running Jfw 11.0.1447 on a 32 bit machine with windows xp sp3. I opened up notepad and just typed it in and then tried reading what I'd written and whamo, down she went. If you don't believe me, take out the dashes andread the word with Jaws. No idea why.
