When you create your own program, you can choose any GUI library you want. I heard that even Wx can be used with Java, although it is not very recommended.
But if you work in a team, you need to use what the other programmers use for a certain program.
SWT is better because it works faster and it is more accessible than SWING.SWING is better because it offers more type of controls and it is Java based. It doesn't depend on the platform the program runs on.
Because Java is made by Sun and Sun promotes SWING, SWING is prefered by most Java programmers. (Because most of the Java programmers also don't care too much about the accessibility issues in SWING.).

Jim, Whose choice is it to pick either SWT or SWING? I mean for a new development can we choose SWT while other employees using SWING?When you're talking about adding accessability fitures manually, do you meanJAWS scripting? Thanks, Anna -----Original Message----- From: program-java-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:program-java-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Corbett, James Sent: Thursday, October 23, 2008 10:36 AM To: program-java@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [program-java] Re: JDeveloper 11G (download) Anna: SWT as well as SWING / AWT are technologies for creating rich clientinterfaces.... much like Windows. In fact, SWT relies upon the native widgettool kit that is integral to most operating systems. SWT / IBM's approach was or is to use what already exists and wrap these controls for their own particular use. A command button whether rendered in Visual C++, VB or with SWT shouldappear similar and behave in the same manner. On the other hand SWING and orAWT re-event the wheel so to speak and created their own versions ofcontrols which don't behave in the manner as with the former, therefore as a programmer we must add accessible features manually to these controls, rely upon the Access Bridge and the adaptive technology companies to keep pace inorder for the blind community to have reasonable access. An Integrated Development Environment, does as it suggests. It allows manyfeatures such as real time debugging, creation of packages, refactoring andmuch much more. They bring together many features into one neat package. This is not very good unfortunately, because the SWING applications are not so accessible as the SWT ones. However, in order to use JDeveloper 11G, you first need to get it from Oracle Technology Network: http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/jdev/index.html Pick the Oracle JDeveloper 11G download. Check the Accept license agreement on the next page, and then the download JDeveloper studio for windows link. You will then be prompted for your oracle.com login credentials I believe itis pretty simple to get a login. Once you login, the download will start. It is almost a 700mb download. You will be downloading jdevstudio11110install.exe. Put it somewhere simpleto remember and stay tuned for installation instructions. -- Oracle <http://www.oracle.com> Donald Raikes | Accessibility Specialist Phone: +1 602 824 6213 | Fax: +1 520 744 0826 | Mobile: +1 520 271 7608 Oracle JDeveloper Quality Assurance | Tucson, Arizona Green Oracle <http://www.oracle.com/commitment> Oracle is committed to developing practices and products that help protect the environment
