I've been using both real player alternative and quick time alternative for a while. They both work well. The Quicktime alternative won't play some quicktime files though. It seems to be files that come on instructional dvd's. I haven't figured out why. I did find a "portable" quick time that I use when the alternative won't play a file. Portable apps run fine but don't write anything to the registry of your computer and so don't mess up file associations. Clint, you might do a google search for a "portable" real player. I know there are some out there. If you can find an up to date version you could use that when you want to download an rm file. John I never received your post, I only saw it when David replied on it. I'm glad I saw it because it had the method I really wanted, and that is MPC playing .rm files. That's the best thing that could happen, now we don't have to jack around with RealPlayer BS. I installed "Real Alternative" you mentioned and now MPC will play all .rm files, so there's no need for RealPlayer! HA!! Karl, Ed, Hugh, David, & John, there's a few things one may have to do to do this. Apparently the download gives you the Codecs needed to play Real media (.rm) files on any MPC (Media Player Classic) version. But it also installs an OLD version of MPC, build 81. I have build 98. I don't know if this will still work if you uncheck to install the MPC version or not, it probably will if the Codecs are still installed. When I would play a .rm file, or a .avi file, or other, I had THREE different builds playing them (81, 91 and 98). That kept happening even after "Open with....." and selecting build 98. So I had to delete all MPC's I found on my HD except the one I put in the "Windows Media Player" folder which was v98. That enabled v98 to open and play ALL media types, including .rm files. The only problem I see is when playing .rm files, there's no longer the seek controls. There's just stop, play & pause, the rest are grayed out for some reason. ?? So I highly recommend it. No more RealPlayer issues. Now there's one thing and one thing only I liked about RealPlayer, and that's this latest version I tried a few days ago added a "button" to all .rm embedded files that allowed you to download the video in one click. You'd right click (or hover) the clip and see the download link. I tried all sorts of types of these things and NONE of them worked until I tried the RealPlayer method. So the question now is how to get that back without having to install the full RealPlayer? I would you guess you cannot and you'd still have to install RealPlayer but just delete it (the main file) along with all its intrusive "call home" files. -Clint God Bless, Clint Hamilton, Owner www.OrpheusComputing.com www.ComputersCustomBuilt.com www.OrpheusComputing.com/PCworks-computer-help-email-list.html ========================= The list's FAQ's can be seen by sending an email to PCWorks-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with FAQ in the subject line.
