they are rechargable batteries - and they charge when they're in the cradle! I love it! knock on wood - mines been working for probably close to a year now. One of my son's friends said he replaced his batteries about every 6 months. You can use regular batteries too if you want. No clue how long they would last. I was replacing my microsoft batteries about once/week. I was NOT a happy camper. I don't believe they have called dell yet - since her husband didn't believe her that it was doing it. now - in my house, I would be the one calling dell - regardless of whos computer it was - but not in their house.... I haven't heard from them yet to know if they tried putting a mouse on it or not. They should have a mouse from their old computer that they can test it with.
