To ask a dumb question: If one *has* to go with HP AND one also needs a
device under $100 or so, couldn't one use simply the fax modem that is
probably in one's computer to support the fax capability, thus obviating the
need for the higher-priced model ($299)? (Of course, all prices listed on
the site are MSRPs (manufacturer's suggested retail prices).)

They all have the flat bed scanner, but it looks like the only one that
includes FAX capabilities is the fourth one that goes for $299 US.
