Glo,

If you have no intention of doing any stationery or graphics stuff... and
you do not want to receive anything that html then Wyatt's suggestion is
correct and will work for you. You can disable the html.

I can tell you from experience..that I have been very diligent in having up
to date virus scanning and using it to scan all incoming and out going
mail...I have the Norton Systemworks 2003 and the Norton Personal firewall.
I too have a cable connection. I also have a router. I have two computers
networked and they go through the router to the internet and they are on
most of the time.

I do not leave the computers on if I will be away from them for over an hour
or so in the summer as it makes the room too hot. I had to buy a window air
conditioner just for this room as it was making the whole house hotter and
making the house air conditioning run so much more. I have seen a drop in
my electric bill since doing this..and no.. no miracle happend...our rates
did not go down... just the opposite I am afraid! I do lots of graphics
stuff.

I get thousands and thousands of emails with attachements... At least a few
hundred a day....

I have actually received at least 50 -100 virus warnings over the years.
Norton caught every one of them.

I have been on line since 1988-1989. I have actually had one virus get
through to my computer. I am not sure how it happened... but, the way I
knew it..was I ran a Norton Scan and it found it.

I think being diligent pays off. I know the risk I am taking by getting
html mail. I also know, that is is what I WANT to do. I am willing to pay
for the software to protect me. I am willing to run the scans. I am
willing to belong to a list like this so I can learn more about what is
happening on computers and the net and how to make and keep myself safe.
These are conscious decisions I am making. I think everyone has to make
those decisions for themselves.

I am installing ad-aware pro today.. as a further bit of trying to keep a
little of my personal info..personal...but unfortunately, we know ..that is
not a reality for so many. One of the things I often do..is write
personally to a new member of a group..who uses their real first and last
name as an email address. Many folks do not realize how potentially
dangerous that is.

Just decide what it is you want..what you are willing to do to have it..and
then decide it if is worth it to you.

And no matter what... BACKUP your computer data... you spend a lot of time
getting it... you wanted it..you gathered it... you filed it... back it up
and keep it......

Have a great day...... I hope I do not sound too much like I am on a soap
box... I just want you to think about your options..and decide for
yourself...

Enjoy your computer..and have fun!
Hugs,
Rose
Las Vegas

So Wyatt, I think I'm beginning to understand: are you saying there is no
way to disable HTML in Outlook Express, that is why you use a different mail
program? And that's the reason OE is so vulnerable, because of it's
inability to disable html? And what is the mail program you use? I'm going
to get a cable connection and am trying to do everything I can for security
since I'll be "online" all the time. Maybe that isn't such a good idea...

The scripts can still run if HTML is enabled. They do nit come as
attachments, they are imbedded in the HTML code of the messages. If you
don't use HTML mail, you can eliminate a very large number of threats.

On 6/6/2003 at 4:44 PM a whisper was heard, and the one known as
TechRose@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx was rumoured to have uttered....

            | Hi all...
            |
            | In OE...under tools, options, security
            |
            | Under virus protection
            | there is a box to check about not allowing
attachments
            | or things
            | that might be a virus.....
            |
            | With that checked.. I think the scripts do not run....
            |
            | Also, the choice above would be good to check.. to notify you
            | if
            | applications are trying to send mail as me.
            |
            | That would be pretty limiting... Maybe that is what you are
            | looking for...
            |
            | Hugs,
