There are several places where a volume switch is located. I am using XP now, but your operating system should be similar. On the system bar along the bottom of most computer screens you will probably find what appears to be a speaker. If I left click on it an icon appears where I can move the volume up or down. If I right click on it, I get a rectangular button that covers two topics, one that covers the audio of many of the sound devices such as microphone, CD, midi files, wav files, etc. There is a mute button and a volume switch for all of the above. Behind the same rectangular button, I find, Adjust Audio Properties which contains a number of items concerning volume, audio properties etc. Then you can go to start, control panel and then click on Sound and Audio Properties which will take you to the same place as Adjust Audio Properties above. In all of these places make sure the volume is high and that mute is not clicked.
