My TBH was from a friend who made it for his own use but due to health issues
he sold it to me so can't compare. Actually I have observed during the recent
spell of warm weather a few bees have been crawling on the grass and unable to
fly. They don't looked deceased l am not sure. The bees in the hive are flying
well collecting etc. I took the opportunity ( due to warm weather) to open the
hive on Friday. They looked healthy. I was saw the queen for the first time
pity l didn't have my camera with me. I closed up and put extra external
insulation on the roof and left them alone.

I also used Thorne's TBH to start with (mine cost £120 in Jan 2018) and paid
£56.40 for sufficient 30mm cork to add extra insulation to two hives. Plywood
covering, 6mm, for the cork £10 for two hives. I made follower boards from
plywood I already had. The acrylic for the window was £15 - I didn't think of
Eric's elegant solution of a glass shelf! Stainless steel screws £7.80. The
eke cost around £15 for the wood.
I'm not sure I wanted to know how much I'd spent!

Ah, queen excluder. Yes. We frown on those but they are undeniably useful if
you want some honey. I rechecked my potentially honey yielding Warre yesterday.
By golly there are nowmore brood in the top box than a few days ago, they're
meant to be out of there by now! I'll need to wait a bit longer to get that
harvested, or maybe wait 'til Spring now.
BTW my bees are madly busy (flying) in the rain. I assume the plants are
offering a nectar splurge now it's raining for the first time in a week, so
it's all hands on deck to pack it in. Our holly tree was buzzing so loudly I
thought there might be a swarm up there (it flowered months ago) - but it's
insects gorging on the ivy threaded through it.
