Patrick has no idea of the cost for the one he built as he mainly used scrap
wood, gleaned from a skip, and had screws already in his shed. Or maybe he is
being discreet as it was my Christmas present!
We paid £175 for the very large double entrance red cedar TBH with eco floor,
secondhand which came with all sorts of extra goodies including skep, hive
tools, and 4 beesuits!
Cheers,
Jane

I also used Thorne's TBH to start with (mine cost £120 in Jan 2018) and paid
£56.40 for sufficient 30mm cork to add extra insulation to two hives. Plywood
covering, 6mm, for the cork £10 for two hives. I made follower boards from
plywood I already had. The acrylic for the window was £15 - I didn't think of
Eric's elegant solution of a glass shelf! Stainless steel screws £7.80. The
eke cost around £15 for the wood.
I'm not sure I wanted to know how much I'd spent!

Plus hinges about £5 plus timber 2 x 1.8 m lengths to make the "Helen eke"
above it. about £15
I used Thornes TBH £134 (assembled) as a starting point.
Certainly costs more than Helen's!

That's impressively archived! Thank you.
And a much more believable cost. I don't see windows mentioned - I thought at
least one of your hives had a window?
Ah, queen excluder. Yes. We frown on those but they are undeniably useful if
you want some honey. I rechecked my potentially honey yielding Warre yesterday.
By golly there are now more brood in the top box than a few days ago, they're
meant to be out of there by now! I'll need to wait a bit longer to get that
harvested, or maybe wait 'til Spring now.
BTW my bees are madly busy (flying) in the rain. I assume the plants are
offering a nectar splurge now it's raining for the first time in a week, so
it's all hands on deck to pack it in. Our holly tree was buzzing so loudly I
thought there might be a swarm up there (it flowered months ago) - but it's
insects gorging on the ivy threaded through it.

Hi Paul
Attaching a document which I hope shows my hive-building costs. these are the
bits I had to buy. Some extra things may have been lying around in the garage!
Hope it's helpful.

People used to say you could build a TBH for £30. I've never heard of one made
for that little. Could those who've built their own, say how much they spent?
