Hi list, as promised here is the update on my experience with installing my
first PSU. Overall, things went well - I just had this one small snag:
While running opatch apply, it stopped at this error:
Copy failed from '/baandev/oraarc/patch/9119284/files/lib/libjox10.a' to
'/opt/oracle/product/10.2/db_1/lib/libjox10.a'...
Please verify all applications associated with the Oracle Home
'/opt/oracle/product/10.2/db_1' are shut down. If this is AIX, please perform
solution documented in Note 739963.1 on https://myoraclesupport.oracle.com.
Do you want to retry copying the file? [y|n]
To Oracle's credit, they did provide a reference to the appropriate MOS note
here, so that was helpful. I checked the note, had my Unix admin run slibclean
as instructed, and then told opatch to retry the file copy and it completed
successfully.
There was also some discussion on this thread about a problem with the
prerequisite check of opatch not running properly when executed with the
-phbasedir parameter as instructed in the documentation. This problem is
documented in MOS Doc ID 861507.1, however when I ran the command, it worked
just fine with the -phbasedir parameter as you can see below, so I think maybe
they fixed this problem in opatch 10.2.0.4.9

Another new thing I encountered was that opatch asks for MOS credentials and
I've heard from others that sometimes it will fail if you do try to enter you
email address and password, however I found that it allows you to continue if
you just hit Enter instead of entering an email address as shown below:

Oracle Support Email address/User Name.

I'm just waiting for the green light from my developers to take some downtime
and patch their database, and then I'll post my results - hopefully in a couple
