I don't work for Delphix but I have seen it in the wild and talked to
customers. Many view the thin cloning as a commodity (i.e. everyone has
it). What I think sets Delphix apart is the fact that the end user can
request the environment and the DBA or the storage admin don't actually
have to do anything. It's empowering and users like it. Yes, it's efficient
on the back end and all that but that seems to be the major reason
customers like it.
Oracle has a similar capability with EM and DBLM + Clound Management Pack.
It still needs to integrate with your backend storage to do the snapshots.
I don't know what Commvault does.
Mladen, does Commvault have a self service capability? Would be good to
know.

that would qualify as marketing.
I'm on this list to find solutions to real problems and to offer advice
where I can.
So feel free to expand on your product, what sets it apart? Why would I
implemented your product vs another? If I'm cloning a 10T database, what is
the footprint?

That is precisely what I am doing. Commvault can clone databases using
storage snapshots. We can also seed the cloud for AWS and Azure and copy
the database to the cloud. Commvault 11, the product formerly known as
Simpana, is a full fledged backup suite which supports snapshots and
cloning.

How many other tools were mentioned on this group, as a possible cloning
solution? How many times was Delphix mentioned during the last few
months? I am not attempting to control anything, I am just warning the
readers of this group about the marketing. There is a simple truth:
there are other solutions for cloning databases, which deserve some
mention, with different strengths and weaknesses. Yet, for some reason,
only Delphix is regularly offered as a cloning solution on this group.
