It's true, but even with a Gigabit connection between the DB Server and the App Server, retrieving data and sorting or filtering it in the app server still has a much bigger cost. I worked for 2+ more in a company that makes a very good business with a sniffer tool; lots of clients where network depts that wanted it to prove there was a problem somewhere else (application design).

Many new projects today use the Application Server model, so usually the AS
is very close to the database server.
